MEDAL-winning wheelchair racer Jade Jones is the latest elite athlete to sign up to Taylor Wimpey Tees Pride 10k in Middlesbrough.

Miss Jones who won an impressive bronze medal in the T54 1,500m final at the recent Glasgow Commonwealth Games, will be taking part in the wheelchair race which starts just 10 minutes earlier than the main 10k race on Sunday, August 31.

Despite being only 18-years-old, the former Ormesby School pupil has already reached the T54 1,500m final at London 2012 Olympics.

She is now being coached and mentored by husband and wife team Dr Ian Thompson and 11-time Paralympic gold medallist Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson.

She was just 12 when she was spotted by Dame Tanni at a school sports day and like her mentor wants to help other young para-athletes get into her sport.

She said: “When I was at school, I didn’t even know the sport existed. It’s great to see the profile raising and I’m delighted to be able to compete in my home town.”

The Taylor Wimpey Tees Pride 10k and 3k Fun Run takes place on Sunday, August 31. Entry for the 10k is £16 or £14 for affiliated runners, with the 3k priced at £7. Family entry is £24 for two adults and a maximum of three children.
