KEEN photographers are being encouraged to get snapping to try and help Middlesbrough secure city status.

Shots of the town's best loved features and landmarks are needed as the campaign continues to seek the seal of approval from Her Majesty.

The town is one of a number hoping to be granted city status as part of the Queens Diamond Jubilee celebrations next year.

And a key element of the bid will be a portfolio of up to 50 photographs of buildings and landmarks rather than events or people.

Tourism officer Yaffa Phillips said: "What we have been asked to submit are pictures which capture the essence of Middlesbrough - the emphasis is really on showcasing what makes Middlesbrough a town ready to become a city rather than photographic artistry.

"We know we have some great buildings and locations - think mima, the Transporter Bridge, Middlesbrough College, Acklam Hall and Temenos to name but a few.

"We also know there are lots of photographers out there, and in the digital age its easier than ever to take and send in high quality images."

The City Status photography has been backed by local amateur photographer James Scanlan, from Middlesbrough, recently took up photography as a hobby and he focuses on capturing the beauty in every day scenes in the town.

The 62-year-old, said: "I would encourage people to get hold of a camera and they will find Middlesbrough is a much more interesting and fascinating place than they might first imagine.

"You will look closer at things and you will see the beauty in every day things. Some of the most beautiful scenery to be had anywhere is on your doorstep.

"So take your camera and get snapping. It will be good for the town and it will also be good for you."

Photographs - maximum size 4mb per photo - can by sent email to bidphotos@lovemiddlesbrough.com or can be submitted via Flickr by adding add them to the group at flickr.com/groups/lovemiddlesbrough/ - tag photos with borocitybid.

It is hoped to stage an exhibition of works from the Flickr group during the Discover Middlesbrough festival in September.
