Leisure centre hosts dancing dogs
DANCING dogs will be competing for a place at Crufts at a North-East leisure centre later this month.
Up to 160 pets and their owners will be taking part in a skills competition set to music, often known as doggie dancing, at Teesdale Leisure Centre, in Barnard Castle, on May 24 and 25.
Dogs will work off the lead, moving in harmony to demonstrate their technical prowess in eight heelwork positions.
Routines in the freestyle section can last up to four minutes and contain fancy footwork and inventive moves.
Several of the 16 classes act as qualifiers for next year's Cruft's competition, regarded as the world's leading dog show.
Sections such as the young Kennel Club handlers and advanced freestyle and heelwork sections should attract some of the country's leading dog dancing specialists.
Spectators are welcome from 9.30am on both days but only dogs taking part in the competition will be admitted.
The event is organised by Northern Mutts N Music, from Barnard Castle, with Louth and District Dog Club.
