Aycliffe town centre plans go on display
THE latest plans for a town centre's long awaited redevelopment will go on display to the public.
Newton Aycliffe town centre was split in two when a Tesco's supermarket was built on one side but the rest of the town was neglected.
Since then an informal partnership comprising of the Aycliffe town centre owners; the county, borough, and town councils; and the concerned health trusts has formed to try to find a solution.
Wendy Benson, Sedgefield Borough Council's town centre regeneration manager, said the partnership had been working to develop a positive way forward for the town centre and is seeking the public's views on its new plans.
The plans will be on display from Monday, May 12, to Friday, May 23, from 2pm each day, in Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre foyer.
Comments can be left at any time but the stands will be attended on Monday between 12pm and 7.30pm and Tuesday between 9am and 2pm, for any questions.

I need to correct the writer of this story. Firstly, if you were familiar with the area and the history of this ongoing saga you would know that the site that Tescos sits on was NEVER and has NEVER been part of the town centre. Therefore the town centre was NOT split in two. Tesco sits on the site of the old Youth Centre which was old delapidated and they kindly built a brand new one for the young people of Newton Aycliffe ...something that local government was not prepared to do.
Secondly the town centre is privately owned and the extortionate rent prices they have charged have forced many of the shops to close down, leaving it in a sorry state of repair and it is now like a ghost town. ALL responsibility for the upkeep of the town centre relies with the owners, not Tesco, not the local councils and not the community. The owners are solely responsible for the neglected state it is currently in. So once again I must stress, the owners of the town centre are the people who have neglected it....no-one else.
There has been a stalemate situation between the town centre owners and other interested parties for a number of years. Had there not been an amount of 'greed' involved, no doubt this would have been resolved as many years ago.
