Outstanding inspection before head retires
AN outstanding school inspection report has delighted teachers and pupils at a Wear Valley school.
Willington C of E Primary School was praised for the personal development of pupils and its use of information technology after an inspection from Ofsted last month.
Head teacher Bill Guymer, who will retire this September, said: "We're absolutely delighted, it has confirmed what we already believed to be true."
Mr Guymer said the work of the pupil's school council was key in maintaining good relations between pupils, teachers and the community as a whole.
"The school council would still be talking to the inspector now if they could.
"They really got the chance to shine which I was really pleased with."
The inspectors were particularly impressed with the school's "excellent" approach to IT - every pupil in year five and six has their own designated laptop.
Willington C of E is also linked with a primary school in Tanzania which the pupils have held several fundraising events for.
Mr Guymer said: "The children have a great awareness and sensitivity not just for each other but for the wider world."
As Mr Guymer plans to retire this August he is pleased to be leaving the school on such a high.
The deputy head Alison Richardson is scheduled to take over the role in September.
