Designer's smoke rings give the right signal

A DESIGNER has turned to Greece for the inspiration behind an award winning device to help people stop smoking.

Gavin Flowers' anti-smoking ring won a prize from the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA).

The 23-year-old Northumbria University student, from Newton Aycliffe, designed the interactive ring for a project on self-control.

It is composed of two inter-locking rings with a personal message engraved that reminds the wearer why they want to stop smoking.

Mr Flowers said: "The ring is a symbol of commitment so it works on an emotional level.

"However, I discovered that in Greece men used a form of worry beads which occupied their hands and seemed to help them stop smoking.

"This ring could be used in the same way as a form of displacement therapy."

Mr Flowers, in his final year of a design for industry degree won a graduate internship at GlaxoSmithKline worth £7,500, through the RSA awards.

Mark Bailey, senior lecturer in design for industry at Northumbria, said: "The RSA Design Directions competitions provide an excellent platform for our students to test themselves against other young designers dealing with important social and commercial issues.

"These awards have been running for very many years and we know from past successes that they are internationally recognised within the design profession as a mark of excellence and will help these students to secure good jobs at the start of their careers."
