PRIMARY school children have been given an insight into the world of work through a project aiming to make them better readers and writers.
Year 3 boys at Prince Bishops Primary School, in Coundon Grange, have joined a Click It club to record outside visits and other activities on digital cameras and write about their experiences when they return to their desks.
They visited stables to watch a blacksmith, equine dentist and groom at work and spent a day trying out quad bikes at Weardale Off Road Centre, near Wolsingham.
Future trips will be to a fire station and Sunderland University.
Catherine Howe, higher level teaching assistant, said: "The boys began by thinking of the things that they were passionate about now and what they would really like to do when they got older.
"We found that what really got them excited was anything to do with horses, quad biking and fire fighting."
Headteacher Lynn George said the initiative was already proving to be a success.
She said: "At the beginning of the project the children didn't really think reading or writing was for them.
"By tapping into what really excites and engages them, we have seen some fantastic results.
"The boys can't wait to write letters to places they would like to visit, plan itineraries, produce reports and even write stories, all based on the photographs that they have taken themselves.
"I have been very impressed with not only the standard of the photography, but the children's enthusiasm and ultimately the rising standard of their literacy skills."
