THE sky above Stockton was lit up by a mass lantern parade this week and children have started making hundreds of beacons for the spectacular event.
Pupils at Tilery Primary School made torches last week and the children, families and members of the local community attended the school on Saturday and Sunday to make many more for the lantern procession on Thursday.
The pageant will snake around the Tilery and Portrack estates accompanied by a samba band called The Rhythm Train and the primary school choir.
Cleveland Police, Durham University students, Sure Start and representatives from churches in the area are also involved in creating the spectacle.
The headteacher of Tilery Primary School, John Repton, said: "Each year our lantern parade gets bigger and better - last year, more than 200 members of the local community joined our children and staff.
"It was fantastic to see people come to their doors and windows to enjoy the parade and we're determined to put on an even better show this year.
"It is a great way to bring families and the local community together."
