RESIDENTS across the Stockton borough are being warned to remain vigilant against unsolicited doorstep callers.
A small number of residents have had men knock on their doors claiming to be ex-offenders on a scheme called Get Back to Life, which they also say is supported by local agencies.
The purpose for their visit is to sell household goods and beauty products. However, no such scheme exists.
Councillor Maureen Rigg, of Eaglescliffe, said she had received reports of a problems in the Yarm area in the last few days.
“I haven’t come across it personally but I am aware that a warning has gone out on the community information bulletin,” she said.
“It is best that people are forewarned about the problem, that way it will stop somebody being taken for a ride.”
Coun Rigg said areas where the men had visited had then received burglaries, however the police say there is nothing to link them to each other.
She added: “We have been informed that some householders have given him up to £40. He is described as white male dark unkempt hair slight build and a scruffy appearance.”
A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said they had received no official complaints.
She said: “Any door to door seller needs to have a pedlars certificate, which is issued by the police and should be able to produce this certificate upon request.
“Officers would like to remind residents to be wary of any unsolicited callers and check identification thoroughly.
“Residents should not let anyone they do not know into their home, unless they have a prior appointment and that the person has been verified as who they say they are.
“They should not give any personal details away to any unsolicited callers or anyone that they do not know.
“Anyone with a door chain or spy hole should use it prior to opening the door and would be quite within their rights to not answer the door to any unknown individuals.”
Anyone who has concerns can contact Cleveland Police on 01642-326326.
