A MAN from the North-East has died after collapsing and falling while walking along Striding Edge just below the summit of Helvellyn, in Cumbria.
The man, who has not yet been named but is from Billingham, near Stockton, died yesterday afternoon.
Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out at around 1.20pm.
The climber had fallen a short distance towards the end of the ridge, just before the final ascent to the summit of Helvellyn - which at 3,118ft is England's third highest peak.
The North-West Air Ambulance treated the man at the scene but he was later pronounced dead.
