Fake £20 notes warning

POLICE in Spennymoor and Ferryhill are urging people to be vigilant against counterfeit money.

Detectives have received a spate of reports of fake £20 notes being used to buy goods in businesses in both towns in recent weeks.

On Thursday January 12 two men called into a shop on Clyde Terrace, Spennymoor, and attempted to buy a bottle of pop with a counterfeit note.

They were described as being around 25-years-old, both were skinny and one had fair hair while the other has ginger hair.

Det Sgt Warren Hawes, of Spennymoor CID, said: "There have been four incidents in about a month we’ve picked up but I suspect there are more that have not been detected yet.

We are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information but also want people to be vigilant, particularly business owners.

It is worth being especially cautious if people are using a £20 note to buy low value goods, it may be they want to get the maximum change possible."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det Sgt Warren Hawes at Durham police on 101.
