Schools celebrate learning

5:44pm Tuesday 9th February 2010

A TOWN’S schools have all been celebrating 100 days of learning.

Secondary, primary and nursery schools in Spennymoor have been counting the days since the start of the school year in September.

Each came up with their own ways to get the most out of school life during the project, from themed lessons to extra curricular activities.

For most, today was the 100th day so they held special events to mark the end of the project.

At Spennymoor School, a technology college, pupils organised activities during with an overall target of raising £100 each for ten different charities.

Pupils were asked to incorporate the number 100 in their outfit for a non-uniform day, there was face painting, a treasure hunt, a bake sale and wishes released on Chinese lanterns in aid of the fund.

There were also writing and design competitions won by year eight pupil Melissa Brazier and Chris Hebdon, from year ten, who each won £100.

At North Park Primary School children made 100 flags to decorate the hall, did 100 star jumps and yesterday released balloons carrying their wishes from the school yard.

A net of 100 balloons were released by Amber Troupe, nine, and Amy Scott, ten, who wrote in exactly 100 words why they wanted to do it.

During the project they raised money to help people affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

And at King Street Primary School the 100 days of learning theme was adapted to make staff and children consider 100 ways of learning.

They worked with musicians, a storyteller, ceramic artists and volunteers on themed events ranging from PE to art.

The work aimed to show pupils how they can use their hands to learn, exploring new activities and discovering practical skills.

It culminated in the creation of hand print tiles for the school entrance.

Those schools that have closed because of snow or staff training will complete the project in the coming days.

Spennymoor Extended Services, which supports children and families in the area, co-ordinated the project.
