Society calendar shows how Ferryhill has changed

THE 2010 Ferryhill History Society calendar is now on sale for £3. It shows how the town has changed over the past 100 years.

Among the most striking pictures is February’s 1950 picture of the Thinford junction on the Great North Road.

Thinford is north of Ferryhill – you can see what we believe to be the Dean and Chapter Colliery chimney smoking in the distance in the centre of the picture – and is an ancient crossing: a Roman route from Binchester to Hartlepool Signal Station went west to east here.

Thinford itself refers to a small crossing of the nearby North Skerne river.

The calendar is available from Broom Cottage News, Mainsforth News, Kelly’s Newsagents and Darlington Road News, plus the Eldon Arms, the Ladder Centre and Ferrydec, which are all in Ferryhill.

Or you could call Tim Brown, of the society, on 01740-652771.
