A NORTH-EAST primary school has been short-listed for a national award in recognition of its use of state of the art technology.

Dean Bank Primary and Nursery School, in Ferryhill, has been nominated for a Handheld Learning Award 2008.

And the deadline for the public to vote for the only school in the region in the final three of the primary school practitioner category is Friday. The awards scheme is supported by Becta, a government agency that promotes innovative use of information and communication technology in education.

Headteacher Chris Young was nominated for the award after the school gained a Becta award for introducing a range of new technologies to the classroom.

Initiatives have included securing grants, school funds and parental contributions to provide handheld mini computers for individual pupils, many of whom come from less affluent backgrounds.

Using the devices in the classroom, for homework and to access selected websites is helping children gain confidence and valuable skills with technology.

Mr Young said: "To have been short-listed for this prestigious handheld technology award is in itself a tremendous achievement but to win it would be fantastic and recognition of the achievements of everyone involved with this innovative project."
