DETECTIVES are investigating a “violent and apparently calculated” attack in which a man was tied up and robbed in his home.

Police now fear the gang may strike again.

Three masked men forced entry to a house in Catterick, North Yorkshire, at about 7pm on Thursday.

They assaulted and restrained the 58-year-old victim, before making off with some of his belongings and his car, a blue Isuzu Rodeo pick-up.

The victim freed himself and alerted the police shortly after the incident and was taken to hospital, where he was treated for cuts and bruises before being discharged.

Police recovered the stolen car at Caldwell, near Richmond, about 14 miles away, where it had been set on fire.

Officers are appealing for witnesses.

Detective Inspector Keith Ruff, of Northallerton CID, said: “This was a violent and apparently calculated attack on a defenceless man in his own home.

“It is fortunate he managed to free himself soon after the incident and raise the alarm, or the consequences could have been much worse.”

Police say they have not ruled out the possibility that further people and other vehicles were involved in the incident.

Det Insp Ruff said: “I am appealing to local residents and the public in general who may have seen any suspicious activity in and around the Catterick or Caldwell areas on Thursday evening to come forward as a matter of urgency.

“Even the smallest piece of information could provide a crucial lead for the investigation team to follow.

“Thankfully, this type of incident is very rare in North Yorkshire.

“However, it is vital that those who committed this crime are brought to justice as soon as possible.”

Witnesses are asked to call Hambleton and Richmondshire CID on 0845-60-60-24-7, quoting the reference number 12100018657.

Information can also be passed on anonymously, via Crimestoppers, by calling 0800-555-111.
