A NEW initiative to encourage residents to walk their way to health has been launched in Richmondshire.
The Richmond and Swale Walking for Health scheme already has 20 members who have signed up for weekly free guided walks around Richmond and Catterick Garrison.
Beginners walks last about 45 minutes with longer 90 minute sessions available for the more experienced.
Scheme co-ordinator, William Gedye, said: "The scheme is aimed at people who need exercise to improve their health, recover from illness, loose weight or to help prevent illness.
"The walks are not hikes – they are steady strolls on easy terrain and give people a chance to enjoy the countryside and make new friends while improving their health. "Many of the people who have already signed up say they are unsure about walking on their own and this scheme gives them the chance to get out and about."
Walks start at 10.15am every Wednesday at various venues in Richmond and every Thursday from Catterick Sports Centre.
Evening walks and other venues are planned in the future.
For more information on Richmond venues contact Mr Gedye on 07710-739192 or email walk.for.health@btinternet.com
