AN historic theatre has been awarded museum status for its efforts to display its collection of stage memorabilia.
The Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond has been granted accredited museum status by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council after reaching high standards in maintaining and presenting its collection.
The theatre is home to the oldest scenery in the country, The Woodland Scene, painted on canvas between 1818 and 1836, and a collection of eighteenth century playbills.
Theatre manager and chief executive Vaughn Curtis said, "The granting of accredited status is very much due to the dedicated volunteers who have developed and adopted new procedures and processes in line with the Council’s standards.
"The Georgian Theatre is reliant on volunteers to look after and present its heritage".
Guided tours of the theatre have now resumed after a winter break.
Tours run hourly until 4pm, Monday to Saturday.
Visitors should turn up on the hour at the shop entrance in Friar’s Wynd.
Group bookings are also welcome and should be pre-booked on 01748-823710
