FIFTY tonnes of hay went up in smoke overnight during a barn fire in County Durham.
County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service were called to the outbuilding in the Heath View area of Station Town, near Wingate, just after 11pm last night.
Appliances from Peterlee, Wheatley Hill and the environmental protection unit from Durham attended the scene, where the 20m by 50m barn was described as "well alight".
An estimated 15 tonnes of hay is still being allowed to burn out this morning, under supervision from the fire service.
The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
