WORK has started on a project to improve an open space in an east Durham town.
The scheme at Hawthorn Square in Seaham, has seen the removal of the old outdated play area on the site, which will be replaced by new equipment as well as some landscaping work.
The project will provide a much-needed revamp of a well-used space within a residential area and is being supported by Hawthorn Square Residents Group, Seaham Town Council and Groundwork North East.
The whole area will be improved by removing old fencing and vegetation to open up the site and improve its overall appearance as well as installing new play equipment.
An area for football will also be included on the site to allow residents to enjoy a varied recreational facility. The site has been designed in consultation with local residents to ensure that the project caters for the needs of the whole community.
The project costing £49,000 has been funded by the Community Spaces Programme, Community Spaces is part of the Big Lottery Funds Changing Spaces Initiative.
