POLICE accident investigators today appealed for information from witnesses to a fatal road accident.
The driver of a Nissan Terrano was declared dead at the scene, on the B1283 Durham Lane, near Easington Village, County Durham, at approximately 9.05pm last night.
Police said the 43-year-old motorist, from Shotton Colliery, County Durham, was apparently driving on a stretch of the country road between the Pemberton Arms, near Haswell, towards Easington, when, "for some unknown reason", the car veered off the road into the offside dirt lay-by, before returning to the road, crossing the carriageway and overturning.
No other vehicle is believed to have been involved and it is not thought anyone else was in the car at the time.
Paramedics arriving at the scene confirmed the driver's death.
The stretch of road where the accident took place was closed while police carried out initial inquiries, until 1am today.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Durham Police accident unit, on 0345-60-60-365.
