THE ancient city of York comes under the TV spotlight this weekend when a leading academic explores its story-laden streets.

In Channel 4's series Britain's Most Historic Towns, Prof Alice Robert studies one key period in history by delving into the secrets of a town that encapsulates the era.

And on Saturday at 8pm she will be focussing on York as the country's "most Viking" city.

She will be taking part in a Viking battle, meeting the metal detectorists behind one of the UK's greatest archaeological finds - and getting her hands on Viking poo that is almost 1,000-years-old.

She will also visit historic sites and meet local historians to get an understanding of hos the city was shaped by the dominant forces of the age.

And at the climax of the show, cutting-edge CGI will show how the city looked in all its Viking glory.

Other cities to be featured in the series include Norwich and Winchester.
