WOMAN who have made their mark in the world is the theme of a new display of portraits from the National Portrait Gallery at Beningbrough Hall, near York.

Judi Dench, Darcey Bussell and JK Rowling are just some of the creative women featured in the exhibition, which has taken over four galleries.

The display showcases a series of diverse portraits varying in scale and media recognising some key British women who have made their mark in the worlds of writing, art, music, performance and dance.

There are additional features with a costume from the film "The Duchess" worn by Keira Knightley and an interactive jukebox to play by the portraits of Amy Winehouse, Grace Jones, Neneh Cherry and Dame Janet Baker.

Visitor operations manager Jane Whitehead said: “This new exhibition is an exciting and bold step for Beningbrough with portraits themed through several rooms."

The exhibition, for the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote, runs until November 4
