ARMED forces organisations are being sought to take part in an international memorial parade.

The Yorkshire Air Museum near York has set a date for its Allied Air Forces Memorial Day on Sunday, September 2. The event will see air force and defence attaches and diplomats from many nations, in addition to senior RAF personnel and civic dignitaries.

This year will be particularly significant for the event, as it forms part of the national Royal Air Force centenary celebrations, marking the 100th anniversary of the formation of the RAF and WRAF and the end of World War One.

Veterans and members of service organisations such as the Royal British Legion and Royal Observer Corps are welcome.

Museum director Ian Reed said the parade will be led by the Yorkshire Military Marching Band and Corp of Drums and will progress through the museum to the memorial hanger, where a service is held by a Second World War Halifax bomber.

He added: “It is an opportunity to reflect on the service and sacrifice of so many in defence of the nation and freedom from oppression."

He said they anticipate this year’s event being bigger than ever and are hoping it will be accompanied by an historic aircraft flypast.

Any service organisations wishing to take part are welcome to contact the museum to register their interest, and should contact Ian Richardson, communications manager on 01904-608595 or e-mail; pr@yorkshireairmuseum.org
