A FORMER mental health hospital has been put up for sale.

Bootham Park Hospital in York, which closed suddenly in 2015 when it was deemed unsafe, has been put on the market for an undisclosed price.

The unexpected closure of the hospital caused widespread concern, leaving no alternative in-patient facilities until a 24-bed interim hospital was created.

Patients were forced to travel to surrounding hospitals such as Roseberry Park in Middlesbrough, West Park in Darlington, the Friarage in Northallerton, Sandwell Park in Hartlepool and Lanchester Road in Durham.

The Grade I listed building has been empty since October 2017 when clinical services were relocated to Huntington House, in Jockey Lane, near Monks Cross.

However, MP Rachael Maskell expressed concerns that the hospital could be sold off to developers, and called on the “public interest in the site” to be a priority in any decision.

City of York Council approved plans for a new 72-bed mental health hospital on Haxby Road, which could open in 2019.
