MORE than 140 dogs and their owners took to the streets of York to take part in a sponsored walk and fun dog show for charity.

St Leonard’s Hospice held its annual ‘Paws for a Cause’ fundraiser at the University of York Heslington East campus to raise money for patient care.

There was a choice of a gentle one mile walk for puppies, or dogs with young handlers, or a more challenging four-mile route.

Dogs also took part in fun classes and a dog show, sponsored by Minster Vets, and won prizes for ‘Scruffiest Mutt’, ‘Waggiest Tail’, and ‘Best Veteran’ among others.

Participants also took part in a competition to find the owner that looks most like their dog which was judged by Minster Vets lead nurse Tracey Pulleyn and was won by Emily Chamberlain and her dog, Teddy.

They were awarded a hamper of goods donated by Toft Animal Supplies and all dogs who took part received a free goodie bag and ‘Vets 4 Pets’ sponsored bandana.

Event organiser, Katie Jackson, said: “We had a fantastic turn out for Paws for a Cause this year so thank you to everyone who came along.

"Thank you also to Vets 4 Pets for sponsoring the event and to Minster Vets for sponsoring the dog show, as well as all of the fantastic volunteers who helped out on the day.

"We look forward to hearing how much everyone has raised in sponsorship money for St Leonard’s.”

Sponsorship money is due in by November 6 and a total will be announced at a later date.
