MICHAEL Gove has sent a message of reassurance to farmers and food producers concerned over Brexit during a visit to the Great Yorkshire Show today.

The Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs met with farmers from across the region and said he wants to send a positive message about what Brexit could mean for the industry.

He said: “It has been fantastic to talk to Yorkshire famers today, they produce some of the best food in the world and I have been able to say to them, as we leave the European Union, there will be new opportunities to sell and market that food into new markets.

“But it is also the case that I will do everything possible in order to ensure that the labour that they currently have, some of which comes from the European Union, can stay here so that they have the confidence to invest in the future.”

Mr Gove also reiterated that the Government has guaranteed that farmers will continue to receive the same amount in cash terms that they currently receive up until 2022.

He added that the UK gives “far more” money to the EU than it receives back and that once the country is out of the union there will be additional cash to spend on public priorities such as the NHS.

Mr Gove’s visit comes on the second day of the Great Yorkshire Show which has been buoyed by the improved weather compared to the downpours experienced at its opening on Tuesday.
