AN AGRICULTURE and wildlife college has welcomed a new member to its team – a baby wallaby.

The joey, which doesn’t yet have a name, was born last month at Askham Bryan College, situated on the outskirts of York and is thought to be the first offspring of Wesley – a wallaby who made the headlines when he was brought chaos to York’s roads when he was discovered wondering York’s busy outer ring road in 2014.

Park manager Caroline Howard said: “We’ve got another male called Old Joe, but he’s not the most young or virile male.

“The new joey is going to be in the pouch for a couple of hundred days in total, and he’s just come out over the last few weeks.

"At the moment, the pouch is virtually dragging on the floor, so relatively soon his mother will want to kick it out.”

The college is set to announce the gender of the joey once they can examine it, and is planning to hold a competition to allow the public to name it in the future.
