A 23-year-old man has died after a crash outside an army barracks in the York, police have confirmed.

North Yorkshire Police said a blue Peugeot 206 convertible was in collision with a stationary Mitsubishi Outlander at about 9.25am yesterday in Towthorpe Moor Lane, close to Strensall Barracks.

The two occupants of the Peugeot and the driver of the Mitsubishi were taken to hospital, but the front seat passenger of the Peugeot, a 23-year-old man from York, died from his injuries in Leeds General Infirmary on Monday afternoon.

The driver of the Peugeot was taken to York Hospital and the driver of the Mitsubishi to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.

They sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries, a police spokeswoman said.

One car is understood to have left the road, and another rolled and landed on its roof.

A spokeswoman for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service said three ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, a clinical supervisor and an emergency care practitioner were sent to the scene.

The ambulance service's Hazardous Area Response team (HART), were also sent to the scene.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance sent two helicopters to the scene.

The road was closed to allow emergency services to attend to the casualties and to allow collision investigators to examine the scene. It reopened at around 4pm.

The Peugeot had been travelling towards Strensall from the direction of the A64 and police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash, or saw either of the vehicles before the collision, to contact them.
