AN MP has made an impassioned plea for a U-turn over an Army barracks which has been earmarked for closure.
Rachael Maskell, Labour MP for York Central, wants the Government to change its mind over the city’s Imphal Barracks, which is scheduled to close in 2031.
She told Parliament the closure would have serious impact on the local economy, in a city in need of skilled jobs.
In addition to the 728 serving personnel at Imphal and their families, more than 500 civilian jobs are also based in York and would be lost with the closure. “This would be devastating for the city,” she said.
“The Government must not underestimate the strength of feeling of the community to keep the barracks open in the city, but must also examine the economic case.
“York is in need of skilled and fair paid jobs, and closure will have serious consequences for around 500 families working in the barracks.”
She added: “Having carried out comprehensive research into the decision-making process, it is now very clear closure is the wrong decision for the Army and its capability, the city and the community.”
