RUGBY teams are uniting to raise money for the family of murdered child Katie Rough.

York Acorn RLC is hosting a match today, Saturday, between the Thanet Road club and Skirlaugh ARLFC, from Hull, to bring the community together.

“A few of our ex-players and their families are very close to the Rough family, so when we were asked to do something we said ‘no problem’,” said Dave Harrington, chairman.

He added: “We are a community club and feel we should do something for the community and raise money for the family.

“When I was watching it unfold on the news I could see people I knew, and they have had their own problems of telling their children what happened.

“The family aren’t necessarily rugby people, but they are part of this community.”

The game will kick off at 1.30pm. Entry is £2. There will be a raffle with £600 of prizes, with signed rugby shirts, balls and hair cuts.

Katie, who was seven, died on January 9 after being found with serious injuries in a field off Alness Drive, Woodthorpe.

A 15-year-old girl has been charged with Katie’s murder and possession of a Stanley knife.

She will appear at Leeds Crown Court on February 16.
