ONE of the region’s leading attractions could be in line for an £18m makeover.

Plans are at an early stage for a major capital redevelopment of York’s Castle Museum as part of wider proposals to transform the area it sits in.

Proposals include a new link building between the two former prison buildings which house the museum, as well as a second entrance and improvements that would allow everyone to access all of the museum for the first time.

It would also feature new immersive experiences and displays using authentic objects to tell the story of the castle site and its impact on the North of England.

York Museums Trust estimates the project would cost between £14 and £18m with an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund being planned for December 2018 for a large proportion of the total. If successful the project could be finished in 2026.

Chief executive Reyahn King said: “York Castle Museum sits in one of York’s most historically significant sites.”
