ONE of the region's most iconic stretches of river will be lit up on Thursday in an evocative annual fund-raising event.
Hundreds of paper candles in the shape of water lilies will be floated down the river Ouse in York as St Leonard’s Hospice hosts its annual Candles on the Ouse event.
Each of the candles commemorates a birthday or anniversary, or are a gift for someone special or are a way of remembering a loved one.
The candles will be released at 6.30pm and the best place to view the spectacular sight is between Marygate and Lendal Bridge, near the York Rowing Club Boathouse.
Hospice fundraiser Judy Wilson said “This is a lovely and moving event.
"Each candle is in carries a special and personal message, and seeing them drift along the river is a beautiful spectacle. The sponsorship for each candle goes towards the Hospice’s running costs and enables us to continue to provide outstanding care to the people of York and beyond.”
It’s not too late to dedicate a candle to a loved one – visit stleonardshospice.org.uk/Help/Events/Candlesontheouse before 1-30pm on Thursday
