A PROPOSED visitor centre and shop beside one of the North’s most historic landmarks looks like a public toilet, a residents’ group has claimed.
The English Heritage plans for Clifford’s Tower, in York, which last year attracted 144,449 visitors, would see a building on the side of the motte.
The conservation body said the building, which is scheduled to be completed by next June, would “help celebrate the ruin”.
In a letter to City of York Council, Guildhall Planning Panel objected to the planned building.
Panel clerk Chris Edghill wrote: “The visitors centre is of a poor design and looks like a public convenience. We also believe this is the use it will be put to when it is closed, the area is known for its rough sleepers and street drinkers.”
In another letter of objection, Dr Roger Pierce, wrote: “Its design evokes images of a public toilet or entrance to a 1930s lido.”
