PASSENGERS on board a train near York station were evacuated by emergency services last night after an engine fire.

Crews from York and Acomb were sent to assist after the train had reported it’s fire prevention system had been activated.

When crews arrived, they confirmed a fire had occurred on the express passenger train in its rear engine but was extinguished by the train's own fire prevention system.

Fifty-four passengers and four staff were transferred to a second train as a precautionary measure and returned to York station.

No passengers or staff were injured.

The incident caused delays to trains travelling through York of up to 60 minutes but they are now running normally again.
