A YOUNG cow has been stabbed while grazing in fields in North Yorkshire.

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested and released on bail.

The attack happened on April 9, on Hob Moor, York, police have revealed.

The six-month-old animal survived the attack and has returned to the site, but farmers and members of the community have expressed their anger and shock.

One of the cow's owners, who declined to be named, said: "We are disgusted that someone could do this in this day and age.

"The best thing that can happen is the person responsible is locked up.

"The general public has to appreciate that these are grazing animals in York."

There are currently around 80 cattle grazing on Hob Moor.

The animals have been allowed on there for more than 100 years.

Stephanie Luxton, Friends of Hob Moor chairman, said people should respect the animals.

"I was really saddened and shocked when I heard about this," she said.

"The cattle have a 100 year grazing right to be on the Moor and for the public to be on there as well.

"I feel for the farmer. Cows are there for people to enjoy and the fact we have them so close to our city centre is a lovely sight."

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police said: "Police are investigating reports that a cow was stabbed on Hob Moor in York on April 9.

"The cow sustained a two-inch cut in its side. A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains on police bail while enquiries continue."
