DAREDEVIL bikers turned a former airfield into a blur of high-speed wheelie action as they put their machines through their paces.

A practice day for the World Wheelie Championships took place at Elvington Airfield near York with some weird and wonderful machines.

Reaching scorching speeds of up to 200mph they hurtled along the runway – which at more than three kilometres is among the longest in the country.

During the actual event, which takes place on August 20 and 21, riders will be striving to travel the fastest in the wheelie position for a kilometre.

The event is one of a number of high-speed spectacles to take place at Elvington this year.

They include Ten of the Best, where performance road cars are put to the test, on July 30 and 31, and the Top Speed weekend, when self-designed and built vehicles will try and set worlds, European and UK speed records, on September 17 and 18.
