A 23-year-old man has admitted robbing two girls of their socks and shoes as they were walking along the street in York.

Daryl Kwiatkowski, 23, was charged with two counts of robbery involving girls in York as they made their way to and from school.

He has admitted stealing a pair of shoes from a 15-year-old girl in Nether Poppleton, on the outskirts of York, in September, 2014.

The teenager was pushed to the ground from behind and robbed of her shoes and socks whilst walking home.

The second incident took place on Friday, June 19 this year, in the Acomb area of York, when a ten-year-old girl on her way to school was approached by a man who stole her shoes.

Kwiatkowski, from Jute Road, York, was arrested by police in York in connection with the theft of a pair of pink, children’s Adidas boots from outside a property in York on September 1. Officers were called to reports of the theft and questioned the man, who was arrested and charged with the theft the same day.

Judge Colin Burn adjourned sentence until next month while reports are prepared on him and remanded him in custody.

Kwiatkowski's solicitor advocate John Howard said his legal team would be contacting a psychologist to assess his mental state.

The 23-year-old appeared before York and Selby Magistrates Court on September 3 and admitted the theft, but could not enter his plea to the robbery charges because they can only be tried by a judge and jury.

Magistrates sent him in custody to York Crown Court where he appeared for a preliminary hearing via a video link and pleaded guilty to both robberies.

The judge ordered the probation service to prepare a report on him. Kwiatkowski will be sentenced on October 30.
