THE wonders of wood will be celebrated at an exhibition to be held in Thirsk later this month.

St Mary’s Church is taking part in the York Archaeological Trust’s Jorvik Medieval Festival by staging its own show, Wood You Believe It.

It concentrates on the wood in the church - much of which is medieval - and will also feature work by the local woodcarvers on the Thirsk Furniture Trail.

Organiser Margaret Hunton said: “The exhibition will also include many interesting wooden items, from all over the world, which have been kindly donated by members of the congregation, relatives, friends and acquaintances who regularly support the exhibitions we hold three or four times a year.

“Many of the items tell a story - making the displays more interesting for visitors to the exhibition.”

The exhibition will be open daily from August 22 to September 5 from 10am to 4pm, except on Sundays when it is open from noon to 4pm.

Admission to the exhibition is free but donations to St Mary’s are welcome. Home-made refreshments will be available in the crypt every Monday from 10am.
