DETECTIVES investigating the murder of a man in a York suburb say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.

A 19-year-old man was arrested at the scene of the attack at Hamilton Drive West, after officers were called at about 10.20pm.

Officers found a man with multiple stab wounds who was taken to hospital where he died from his injuries. Police have not yet identified the victim or his connection to the property.

A second man, aged 29, who was found injured in the street by a member of the public, was treated in hospital and discharged in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The 19-year-old was arrested in connection with the incident, and a police spokeswoman said he had suffered a self-inflicted injury, and was receiving hospital treatment.

The spokeswoman said his injuries were not thought to be life threatening, but confirmed he would be taken into custody for questioning once he was well enough to be discharged from hospital.

One local resident, who did not wish to be named, said the injured man had staggered from the scene of the attack and ended up outside her home. She said: "My youngest child came down and said 'mum, there's a man in our garden'.

"The man was sitting there bleeding. The next thing I knew police had arrived and were talking to him outside my gate."

The resident said the man had suffered a wound to his head but was able to talk coherently and got into an ambulance with little assistance.

She said: "The chap said he stopped because he thought someone was having an epileptic fit so he stopped to help but then was attacked.

"I talked to him for a while until the ambulance came and put a bandage on his head and he went with them. More and more people arrived after that, emergency services, going further down the street."

Detectives are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

At about 12.15pm today, officers arrived and began door to door inquiries close to the crime scene, and a police spokeswoman said forensic experts were due to visit the property later.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Walker said: “The incident has caused concern to local people but I would like to offer some reassurance to them that the suspect was quickly arrested at the scene and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. Our enquiries remain ongoing today and there will be a police presence in the area while we continue to investigate and gather evidence from the scene.

“Our thanks go to local people who have been affected, for their patience and understanding while we deal with the incident. In particular, I would like to express our thanks to the member of the public who came to the aid of one of the victims.

“Anyone who witnessed anything of the incident or has any other information that could help our investigation, I urge you to get in touch.”
