ORGANISERS at the Great Yorkshire Show say it was one of their best first days yesterday (Tuesday) - and with the sun shining down they are expecting more crowds today.

While there are no more royal guests following the visit by Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, today’s highlights largely involve food and farming. The Supreme Sheep Champion will be chosen, along with the Supreme Pig champion. And the winners in the cattle sections will be parading in the main ring.

The cheese and dairy Awards are also presented with competing producers coming from all over the country to battle it out for the main prizes to find the best big cheese.

The original Calendar Girls are also making an appearance at the show, their story of the production of the first calendar of tasteful risqué photographs of members of the WI inspired the campaign and film which raised millions for cancer research .They’ll be on the Welcome to Yorkshire stand along with guest ferrets Wiggo, Cav and Froome who are battling it out in the Tour de Ferretts race .

Show Director Bill Cowling said:”It was a fabulous first day, and with 12,600 animals on the showground, from heavy horses and supreme cattle to poultry along with a huge range of exhibitions and events from fashion to gardening, there really is something for every one.”

Organisers are expecting over 130,000 people over the three days, with the event ending tomorrow evening (Thursday July 16).
