EMERGENCY planners have drafted in extra traffic officers and will provide free recovery to vehicles on a the A1(M) in an attempt to limit congestion during a leading agricultural show.

The measures from junction 49 at Dishforth, near Thirsk to junction 46 at Wetherby, will be in place from tomorrow (Tuesday, July 14) until Thursday (July 16) follows traffic queuing for the Great Yorkshire Show, in Harrogate, stretching back to the motorway in previous years.

Andrew Charnick, emergency planning officer for Highways England in Yorkshire, said about 130,000 people were expected to attend the three-day event, which will be visited by Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall and feature showjumping, fashion and cookery shows.

He said: “We have a lot of experience of handling events like this and have tried and tested systems in place.

"We work with our emergency service colleagues to ensure those heading for the event get there with minimum fuss and delays.”

He said motorists not planning to attend the show should plan ahead and leave extra time and check our twitter feeds and websites for the latest information to ease their journeys.
