LOVING couple Rachel Surtees and Craig Whitehead immersed themselves in the Victorian past when they made a little bit of history at their wedding.

The pair, from Whitby and York, have become the first couple to tie the knot in Kirkgate, the famous reconstructed 19th-century street in York’s Caste Museum.

And at the same time they became the first couple in the city to marry under new evening wedding licence laws.

Craig, who first visited the street as a child, said: “The Castle Museum was the perfect venue for our wedding; we were looking for somewhere unique and memorable and certainly found it.

“The guests were really impressed and the whole day was unforgettable.”

The museum’s events manager Jennifer Chadwick said: “A wedding here was always going to be special but to be the first at the museum and the first evening ceremony in York has made Craig and Rachel’s special day even more so.”
