THE Duke of York will be paying a call on the city that claims him as its own this week.

He will be in York to formally open the new York Army Museum on Tower Street on Wednesday, March 13, following its major refurbishment.

The military museum, home to some of the most important regimental collections in the UK, received a £1mn Heritage Lottery Grant last year and the former Territorial Army drill hall in the city’s cultural quarter has been transformed into a new visitor attraction.

And the Duke will be shown around the museum which houses the collections of the Royal Dragoon Guards, the former Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire and The Yorkshire Regiment.

The new museum is designed to appeal to a wide range of visitors of all ages and features a seven-metre long dining table with lift-up lids containing a mix of interactive activities.

They can also see sculptures of a cavalry horse, a Sherman tank and many military artefacts and collections.

Prince Andrew will meet the project team and guests, including a veteran of the Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire, retired Major Michael Dillon, whose image on operations in the mountains of Aden in 1966 is on display in the museum.

In his role as Colonel-in -Chief of the Yorkshire Regiment, the Duke will also present the first Duke of York Medal, a new award for outstanding contribution to the Yorkshire Regiment.
