CROWDS of people lined the way today as hundreds of junior soldiers proudly marched through the streets of Harrogate.

The soldiers from the Army Foundation College were exercising their Freedom of the Borough as they paraded to mark the 70th anniversary of VE day.

Led by Harrogate and Tewit Youth Bands, some 450 junior soldiers marched from West Park, down Montpelier Hill, Royal Parade and Swan Road before assembling outside the council offices at Crescent Gardens.

And a further 400 teenagers from the college in Penny Pot Lane lined the route and joined the parade as it passed.

A salute was taken by the college’s commanding office, Lieutenant Colonel Oz Lane, together with the deputy lieutenant of the county, Brigadier Nigel Wood, and the Mayor of Harrogate, Jim Clark.

Following an inspection and presentation, the civic party, which included Honorary Aldermen, veterans and other local dignitaries, attended a commemoration service at St Peter’s Church, Cambridge Road.
