AN inquest has opened into the death of a man who died after stealing and crashing a private ambulance into a double-decker bus.

A brief hearing at Scarborough Registry Office heard Michael South, 40, had been formally identified by his brother at Harrogate District Hospital.

Deputy North Yorkshire Coroner John Broadbridge told the hearing the builder had been living in York and investigations into the incident remained at an early stage.

The crash at 8.30pm on April 10, on the A64 at Flaxton, North Yorkshire, happened as police were looking for Mr South, who it is believed took the ambulance while being transferred to a hospital.

The driver of the Coastliner bus sustained serious leg injuries in the incident, while five passengers were treated at hospital for minor injuries.

Mr Broadbridge adjourned the inquest to July 30.
