WARTIME leader Winston Churchill has once more taken to his trademark hat and cigar – but this time the setting couldn’t be more peaceful.

For the man that led Britain to victory in the Second World War has been recreated using hundreds of flowers by North Yorkshire artist Lucy Hutton Smith.

The special tribute has been created for the Harrogate Spring Flower Show which begins on Thursday, April 23, and finishes on Sunday, April 26.

One of the themes of this year’s event is the 70th anniversary of VE Day and there will be plant nursery displays based on the victory speech, “This is Your Hour” made by Churchill in Whitehall in 1945.

There will also be a wartime allotment, complete with bomb shelter and chicken run, showing how an army of gardeners helped keep the country fed.

The show – the biggest of its kind – welcomes the new growing season with a celebration of the very best in horticulture.

Nature features strongly and show garden designs include a wildlife haven, a “biophilic” garden exploring the ancient connection between nature and our hunter-gatherer ancestors, and a community plot promoting nature’s healing powers.

Live entertainment includes talks and demonstrations in four theatres, featuring everything from cooking the best Yorkshire cuisine to sending garden pests packing.

Tickets available on the gate every day: Thurs-Sat £18; Sun £16. Under-16s get in free when accompanied by an adult. Car parking is free.
