THE Princess Royal will officially open a £450,000 accommodation facility for young racing staff in a move prompted by the tragic death of two teenage jockeys.
Jamie Kyne, 17, and Jan Wilson, 18, died in a fire at Buckrose Court in Malton, North Yorkshire, in September 2009.
A fundraising campaign was launched within the local community by national charity Racing Welfare following the deaths and more than £110,000 was raised.
Additional funding from supporters, including York Racecourse and Qatar Racing, has enabled the charity to redevelop a property in Old Maltongate to provide housing for stable staff, an office for the charity’s regional welfare officers and a hub for the town’s racing community.
Princess Anne, who is president of Racing Welfare, will unveil a special plaque at the new facility on February 17.
