ORGANISERS of the third Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon say they expect the final places in this year's 26.2-mile challenge around York to be taken shortly after they go on sale tomorrow (Wednesday, January 7).

The event, which will be staged on Sunday, October 11, has proved popular with club runners and fundraisers alike as it winds its way across a largely flat course, featuring rural lanes and passes many of the city's historic landmarks.

Launching the marathon, Yorkshire cricketer Ryan Sidebottom said he found it inspiring that so many people wanted to tackle the endurance event to raise funds for good causes.

He said: "I know the crowds will turn out in force to cheer all the runners on.

"I hope all those taking part achieve their personal goals and I wish them all the very best of luck."

The marathon is staged by as part of the legacy of the late Jane Tomlinson, the amateur athlete who raised almost £2m for charity by tackling a series of epic challenges, including cycling over 4,000 miles across America, despite being diagnosed with incurable cancer.
