FOUR talented stonemasons will train at York Minster before competing against each other for a place at a prestigious competition.

Three hopefuls will join the Minster’s third year apprentice, Sam Turner, for the four-day course.

Only one will be selected for the 2015 WorldSkills International competition, which will be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in August.

They will be tested on a wide range of skills, including drawing, hand-carving and using computer-controlled cutting devices.

Rebecca Thompson, superintendent of works for York Minster, said that the training course is a “real testament to the quality of work that takes place here."

She added: “Our masons are known for being some of the best in the world, so it is fitting that they have been selected to take these young competitors through their paces so they can compete on the world stage.”
