THE bells of York Minster will ring out in a special act of Remembrance on Sunday afternoon.
They will be rung half-muffled to mark the centenary year of the outbreak of the First World War.
The heaviest 10 bells of the peal hung in the south-west tower will be rung 1,914 times in different permutations or “rows”, with alternate rows being muffled.
It should produce the effect of a soft echo which will transform the normally joyous sound of the bells into one of solemn mourning.
The peal will commence at 2.15pm and will take approximately one-and-half hours to complete. The ten bell ringers taking part are all members the York Minster Society of Change Ringers.
